Arizona

In 2016–17, my husband and I invested in a working gold mine in the Sonoran desert. I stayed and worked there for some time — and fell deeply in love with Arizona desert life. The vast skies, the silence, the heat, the saguaros standing sentinel at dusk. It was a wonderful, unforgettable experience.

Vulture Ghost Mine

Neighbouring our working mine lay Vulture City — Arizona's most notorious ghost town, once the richest gold mine in the state. Walking its abandoned streets, I was struck by the strength and resilience of those who came here — immigrants and adventurers from across the world, forging new lives in a foreign land, driven by the hope of fortune. Their humanity endures in the adobe walls, the rusted machinery, the lives left mid-sentence.
